The first comic Previous comic Next comic Today's comic The main character uses switches in his gloves to activate equipment,
although at the moment he only has a couple of devices. The problem with
switches in the gloves is being able to trigger them when desired, but not have
them go off by accident at other times. One possible solution is to have multiple switches that have to be pressed in
proper combinations to trigger the equipment. In this case, there are two
switches, one is a magnetic switch on the finger (in this case a solid state
"Hall effect" sensor) that's triggered by a strip of magnetic material
across the upper part of the palm. By itself it does nothing but when
combined with activation of a pressure switch in the heel of the hand it
triggers the device. So, if he makes a fist, the Hall switch may be close enough to the magnet to
trigger, but the pressure switch is unconnected. If he grabs something,
the pressure switch may be pushed, but the fingers aren't near the magnet so the
Hall switches aren't triggered. Only when he folds the finger down close
to the palm and push on the pressure switch does the device trigger. Panel two shows this. He folds one finger under the baton to bring the
Hall switch close to the magnet and simultaneously push the pressure switch. Behind the visor of the helmet is a shutter. When triggered, it closes
off vision for a split-second. The closing of the shutter sets off a
secondary trigger. A powerful flash unit emits a bright burst of
light. The goal is to temporarily blind others while protecting the main
character's vision. For the main character the result is similar to a slightly longer than normal
blink. For everyone around him, the effect is like several bright photo
flashes going off simultaneously. |
